A man arrested on suspicion of murdering a grandmother and burglary in South Norwood has been bailed.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of Eulin Hasting's death following a fire in Birchanger Road on Tuesday, January 10.

Officers and London Fire Brigade attended and fire crews pulled the 74-year-old from the ground floor of the semi-detached property.

But sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, 11 January but cause of death could not be determined and officers await further test results.

Prior to being called to the fire, police were called at about 3pm to reports of a burglary in nearby Davidson Road.

Officers attended the scene and a man, who was in possession of a knife, was seen to flee from the property.

He was located in the vicinity of Davidson Road and was seen to climb on the roofs of a number of properties.

Police negotiators were called to the scene to assist local officers.

The 26-year-old man came down from the roofs at about 8.05pm.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder and burglary.

During the investigation it was established that the man was wanted on recall to prison for a separate offence,

He has been returned to prison and bailed pending further enquiries to a date in late January in relation to this investigation.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, led by Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Gwyn, are investigating and continue to appeal for witnesses and information.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "At this early stage detectives believe that the murder and the burglary are linked and enquiries are underway to establish the circumstances that led to her death and the burglary.

"Both incidents occurred during the middle of the afternoon and there is a possibility that someone may have seen something that could assist detectives with their investigation."
