Transport for London (TfL) is considering altering two bus services in Purley so they no longer loop Sainsbury’s on Purley Way.

If the plans get the go-ahead, the 289 and 455 routes could be changed so they both run straight through the road, cutting stops in Trafalgar Way and Drury Crescent.

The 289 bus runs between Purley station and Elmers End station, while the 455 runs between Old Lodge Lane and Wallington station.

TfL’s proposals would mean the 289, while travelling southbound, would no longer go through Croydon Colonnades.

Two bus stops located on the ‘loop roads’ at Waddon March would also be removed.

And passengers would need to walk about 200 metres to other stops in Purley Way as a result.

Removal of the southbound ‘double run’ for route 289 at Croydon Colonnades would mean the route would no longer serve The Colonnades/Croydon Airport bus stop.

Passengers would need to walk 90 metres to Purley Way, where a new southbound bus stop would be provided.

No changes would be made to the frequency of either route as a result of these proposals, TfL said.

A spokeswoman said: “We estimate that the changes at Waddon Marsh would save about three minutes of journey time each for routes 289 and 455, and altering route 289 at Croydon Colonnades would save around one minute.

“At busy times, the time savings could be greater, as buses attempting to access Purley Way from both Waddon Marsh and Croydon Colonnades can experience long delays due to congestion.”

Members of the public are being asked to take part in a public consultation before changes are implemented.
