A Croydon school received glowing praise from inspectors who said its teaching standards have improved significantly.

The once underachieving Beckmead School, in Monks Orchard Road, Shirley, was given an ‘Outstanding’ rating by Ofsted.

Beckmead, which has 184 pupils, was previously rated as ‘Good’ in November 2013, and as ‘Requires Improvement’ following an inspection in 2011.

Inspectors David Scott and James Waite published their findings on Tuesday, January 31, and gave the school an ‘Outstanding’ rating across all four categories of the inspection.

The report reads: “Teaching, learning and assessment are outstanding. Sustained improvements have been well established since the last inspection, for example in the quality of mathematics teaching.

Croydon Council congratulated Dr Clark, pictured, on the OBE he received in January and for turning Becksmead around

“Across the curriculum, resources for learning are excellent, including those for mathematics. They motivate pupils to achieve extremely well.

“Pupils genuinely enjoy their learning and are delighted to show off their new skills to visitors. For example, younger pupils were eager to read to inspectors to demonstrate their newly acquired phonics skills and love of reading.”

Last month the school’s executive head teacher, Dr Jonathan Clark was awarded an OBE in Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for turning Beckmead around.
