Thornton Heath is set for traffic disruption as eight months of gas mains repairs gets underway today.

Gas distribution company SGN will start replacing old metal gas mains with new plastic piping around the Norbury Avenue area today (Monday, February 6).

An SGN spokesperson said the phased work in Norbury Avenue, Camden Way, Camden Gardens, Beulah Road, Wychwood Avenue, Sandfield Road and Windsor Road is necessary “to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply”.

The gas distributor liaised with Croydon Council ahead of the project, which is expected to take about eight months to complete.

Businesses in Thornton Heath will remain open as usual, but SGN does have a compensation scheme for traders who do suffer as a result of the work.

An SGN spokesperson added: “We’re committed to upgrading or network to ensure we continue to keep homes and businesses safe and warm long into the future.

“We’re using the latest technology to minimise disruption as we replace pipes in your community.”

The work is set to be carried out simultaneously by two teams.

From mid-May the team will be upgrading mains in Windsor Road, which will also become one-way, and Sandfield Road.

The spokesperson added: “We are sorry about any inconvenience which our work causes and would like to thank road users for their patience.

“This is a complex engineering project, however, we always aim to minimise disruption whenever possible.”
