Main roads in Croydon town centre will be affected by night-time road closures this week as the final stretch of improvement works take place.

Croydon Underpass is closed in both directions for maintenance between 10pm and 5am daily until Monday, February 20 while maintenance takes place in Wellesley Road.

Also, there will be no exit into Wellesley Road from Lansdowne Road and Sydenham Road until Saturday, February 18 daily within the same time period.

Poplar Walk will be closed from 10pm until 5am the following day on the evenings of 15, 16, 17 and 18 February.

Diversions will be in operation during the maintenance works, and traffic marshals will be available to support those needing access to the roads during these times, Croydon Council has said.

As part of the improvement programme, the Wellesley Road U turn will be permanently removed and traffic will be diverted down Wellesley Road, Hogarth Crescent and Newgate.

The works have been planned to be completed ahead of further works along Wellesley Road that will be carried out over the Easter period.

Councillor Alison Butler, deputy leader and cabinet member for homes, regeneration and planning, said: ā€œIā€™d like to thank everyone for their patience. We are now entering the final stage of the improvement works, which will transform Wellesley Road into a much improved urban space.ā€

The project is funded by Croydon Council, Transport for London and The Mayor of London.
