A building damaged by strong winds in Croydon town centre has caused the road to be closed as police stand guard.

Officers taped off the area surrounding the Land Registry building in Bedford Park this morning.

One witness, Noella Kivlehan, who works nearby, said she saw an unstable “metal rim” hanging loose from the building.

She Tweeted: “Just cordoned off by police due to [an] unstable metal rim on the building ready to blow off in high winds.”

No injuries have been reported, a Metropolitan Police spokesman has confirmed.

Also this morning, a woman needed treatment from paramedics after a tree was blown over and landed on her car in Purley.

The tree collapsed onto her vehicle shortly before 8am in Hartley Down.

She was treated by London Ambulance Services at the scene, and police have confirmed her injuries were not serious.
