A minicab passenger who wanted to travel from Brixton to Croydon was taken on a 140-mile detour after he mistakenly typed Bristol as his destination before falling asleep.

The rider, Aaron Wray, was charged almost £470 for his Uber journey after he nodded off in the back seat.

He was trying to travel the two and a half –mile distance from Tulse Hill to Croydon in the early hours of Sunday morning.

But shortly after 3am, according to messages posted on Twitter, Aaron found himself on a five-hour detour to an address in Bristol.

Mr Wray told The Sun: “I got home at about 8am or 9am. It was all my money for a month gone. I was furious.”

When he woke up the Uber driver offered to take him back to the capital, changing his destination to Croydon, a spokesman for the minicab giant said.

The overall journey cost the man £467.52. He gave his driver, named Abdi, a one-star rating for his journey.

Text messages between Aaron and a friend and the map of the journey has been shared on Twitter more than 7,000 times.

Uber has offered the man a refund for his journey.

A spokesman for the cab company said: “This was clearly an unfortunate mistake so as a gesture of goodwill we would like to offer the rider a refund.”
