Mary Berry wrapped up her latest cookery programme by dropping a bombshell on viewers – she is the proud owner of a blow torch.

The former Great British Bake Off judge was previously against such gadgets but admitted in the final episode of her BBC show Mary Berry Everyday that she has finally given in and bought one to give her meringues the perfect finish.

But watching Mary brandishing the torch as she whipped up tasty treats for her golden wedding anniversary with husband Paul proved to be too much for some viewers.

Many saw the funny side and posted laughing face emojis on social media.

However, others joked that it was a little unsettling, with one viewer insisting he was “traumatised”.

The cook also invited an old friend named Shirley onto Monday night’s show as she rustled up some canapes from the 60s.

The pair bore a close resemblance to each other and viewers were convinced they were seeing double.

Mary, 82, shone the spotlight on her marriage during the episode, sharing photographs from her wedding album and spilling the beans about buying a £5 dress in a sale to marry Paul in 1966.

Mary’s recipes and revelations on the BBC programme have been a talking point each week.

She was previously embroiled in a culinary controversy for using white wine, thyme, cream and an oven to create her version of spaghetti bolognese.

And her hearty potato, leek and cheese pie was at the centre of a storm, with viewers insisting it was a “casserole with a lid” because it did not have a pastry base.

The kitchen queen also surprised viewers by admitting that she had never had a pizza delivered to her home, and she triggered a slew of jokes last week when she attempted to milk a goat.
