Transport for London are considering how to improve Lombard roundabout.

The roundabout – which is thought by TFL to be one of London’s most dangerous junctions – is where Mitcham Road, Purley Way and Thornton Road meet.

The announcement comes after the transport agency assessed casualty figures for the past three years around the capital.

Lombard Roundabout, which forms part of the London Cycle Network, encouraging cyclists to use this route, was noted a problem area particularly in terms of cycling collisions.

Austen Cooper, secretary of Croydon Cycling Campaign, which is a part of the world largest cycling group, said: “We need to see exactly what TfL are proposing to make one of south London's most dangerous roundabouts safer for all road users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists, who despite being the most vulnerable, are barely catered for and are at greatest risk and inconvenience.”

Investigations also revealed that the roundabout is operating beyond what is ‘practical and theoretical capacity’.

If the plans go ahead, then work will be carried out each year to ensure improvements are targeted where they’re most needed.

The plans to improve pedestrian and cycle safety at the roundabout already had planned improvements detailed in TFL’s new business plan.

Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, said: “It’s vital that we target the most dangerous junctions across London if we are to improve our roads for pedestrians and cyclists.”
