Sutton United head to Macclesfield Town this weekend full of confidence after last Saturday’s stunning display of long-range shooting saw Chester soundly beaten 5-2 with four of United’s goals coming from outside the penalty area.

Each one of those strikes would have been a worthy contender for goal of the season award — it’s just a shame that voting had closed for this year’s competition less than 24 hours earlier.

Adam Coombes set the standard with his first goal for the club after five minutes. His swerving drive from 25 yards was followed three minutes later by a rocket shot from a similar distance by Portsmouth loanee Adam May.

Sutton skipper Jamie Collins scored direct from a 20-yard free-kick to put the hosts 3-0 up in the 41st minute leaving Chester goalkeeper Alex Lynch mightily relieved to hear the half-time whistle shortly afterwards.

However, Lynch’s misery was compounded just a minute after the restart when Coombes converted a Collins cross with a cushioned header from six yards for his second goal of the game. But, perhaps the best of the bunch was left until last.

Nicky Bailey – one of the standout performers in a Sutton shirt this season – unleashed a thunderous shot from 30 yards which flew past the beleaguered Lynch to put the home side 5-0 up.

Two late goals by James Alabi gave the Chester fans something to cheer about before they embarked on the second leg of their 430 mile round trip home but the afternoon belonged to the U’s who went on a well-deserved lap of honour at the final whistle having been denied that opportunity after the FA Cup game with Arsenal.

The victory has elevated Sutton up to 12th in the league table and boss Paul Doswell was delighted his team gave such a thrilling display in front of 2,082 at Gander Green Lane.

“Some of the football was outstanding and the quality of all of the goals was stunning," he said.

"You thought you’d seen the best goal with the strike by Coombes but May did almost exactly the same from a different angle and then Jamie [Collins] clips one in the far post from that free-kick.

“Bailey scored a great volley against York. He did it again for us today with another great strike. He has that in his locker.”

Sutton go to Macclesfield with the poorest away record in the division, something Doswell is keen to address on Saturday.

“We’ve played OK away from home but we haven’t got the results and it would be lovely to reward the travelling supporters that are leaving here at 6am because they’ve been immense this year.”

With one eye already on next season, Doswell also revealed that striker Tommy Wright, who has bagged 51-goals while on a season-long loan with Evo-Stik Southern League Division One side Salisbury, will figure in his plans.

Wright held his nerve to score a late penalty on Wednesday night to earn Salisbury a 2-1 play-off semi-final victory over Evesham in front of 1,395 fans and will spearhead the Whites' attack in the final against Tiverton Town on Monday.

The Sutton boss said: "It was right to let Tommy go out on loan and get his 50-odd goals but he's signed a contract with us and will be part of the squad we have here for next season. We've got big plans for him."

Sutton’s early bird season ticket offer for 2017/18 ends on Sunday, April 30.

Existing season ticket holders can renew at just £99 while new supporters can get one for £125.

Season tickets for teenagers are £20 and under 12s £10. Full details at suttonunited.net.
