A Purley mother saved her children from a blaze after a fan fell onto her bedroom floor.

The woman was woken up by the sound of fire at the end of her bed and rescued the children before she fled the Foxley Road building shortly after 9.30pm on Monday (May 29).

She then attempted to battle the blaze herself before firefighters from Wallington and Purley stations arrived.

Paramedics later took her to hospital and the fire was put out at 10.08pm.

Half of the second floor was damaged in the fire.

London Ambulance Service watch manager Ian Day said: “The woman did the right thing initially by getting herself and her children out.

“However, she went back into the flat and tried to fight the fire. It is really important that you never go back inside of a burning building and leave the fighting of fire to the professionals.”

Two men in the ground floor flat managed to escape the building uninjured before the fire crews arrived.
