Kids as young as 11 could soon have their chance to vote in Croydon elections.
No, they won’t be deciding whether Councillor Toni Letts retains her seat as mayor.
Instead they would be voting to see which 16-18 year old takes office as Croydon’s new ‘youth mayor.’
A proposal was put forward at Tuesday’s meeting of the Children and Young People Scrutiny Committee which included the idea of creating a youth council, cabinet and mayor position in the borough.
The report outlined the benefits that ideally would come of this which included the increased visibility of issues affecting young people.
All 16-18 year olds (post GCSE) who live in Croydon would be eligible to stand in the election.
The elected youth mayor would then be given a fund – with early suggestions being £25000 – to carry out their manifesto for their one year term in office.
The proposal would have Croydon’s first youth mayor in their post by March 2018.
