A midnight fly-tipper has dumped a tonne-and-a-half of rubbish onto an Upper Norwood street.

Residents reported a mound of wood, plaster, metalwork, rubble and other waste piled halfway across Auckland Road after they heard a loud bang around 12.05am on Tuesday, June 20.

As well as building materials, the fly-tip included a barbecue, a suitcase and plastic boxes. Croydon Council believed the waste was dumped from a tipper truck before being driven off from the site, which is near the junction with Mowbray Road.

“This kind of crime spoils our local environment, which is why we’re determined to catch this fly-tipper," Councillor Stuart Collins said.

“They obviously don’t care about the mess they leave behind or the clear-up cost to local taxpayers, so I’d urge anyone with information to help our specialist officers whose job it is to track down and prosecute the culprit.”

The fly-tip blocked one carriageway of the road, which meant council officers had to cordon it off from traffic until a specialist grab lorry had cleared the waste away.

Now the council’s environmental enforcement team, which leads investigations into larger fly-tipping offences in the borough, is urging anyone with information to get in touch to help them prosecute the offender. Members of the public with information about the incident can also report it to officers out patrolling from the council’s new dedicated fly-tip taskforce.

Anyone with information can either call the council’s fly-tip hotline on 0208 604 7000 or email flytip@croydon.gov.uk
