A man has been arrested after a sports car crashed into a group of teenagers, killing a 16-year-old girl.

Police were called to Pixton Way, Croydon at 1.24am yesterday following reports of a crash.

London's Air Ambulance, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service also attended and found seven pedestrians injured following a collision with a red Audi A3 convertible.

One of those injured, a 16-year-old girl, died at the scene.

Her next-of-kin have been informed.

The driver of the car, a man, fled from the scene on foot following the crash.

Six other teenagers were taken to south London hospitals for treatment - none of their injuries are life threatening.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "At this early stage it is believed the car was travelling at speed before it lost control at a corner and collided with the pedestrians.

"At this time there is nothing to suggest the car was driven deliberately at the group."

A man in his 30s attended a south London police station yesterday afternoon, Sunday, July 2 and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Detectives from the serious collisions investigation unit are investigating and continue to appeal for information and witnesses to come forward.
