A man arrested following a crash in Croydon which killed a 16-year-old girl and injured six others has been released under investigation.

The 38-year-old man attended a south London police station on Sunday, July 2, and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Detectives from the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit are investigating and continue to appeal for information and witnesses to come forward.

Officers were called to Pixton Way, Croydon at 1.24am on Sunday, July 2 following reports of a road traffic collision.

London's Air Ambulance, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service also attended and found seven pedestrians injured following a collision with a red Audi A3 convertible.

One of those injured, a 16-year-old girl, died at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed but formal identification has not yet taken place.

The six other people injured, a mixture of males and females aged in their teens, were taken to south London hospitals for treatment - none of their injuries are life threatening.

Police say the driver of the car, a man, fled from the scene on foot following the collision.

At this early stage, police believe the car was travelling at speed before it lost control at a corner and collided with the pedestrians. They say at this time there is nothing to suggest the car was driven deliberately at the group.

Anyone with information or anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Catford on 020 8285 1574 - alternatively call police via 101 or tweet information @MetCC.
