A 150 wheel 400 tonne land train rolled into Croydon this week to deliver a power boost to the borough.

What was the delivery? A 140 tonne transformer.

It is understood that this new transformer, converting 240 Mega Volt Amperes (MVA) to 275-132 Kilovolts (KVA) will assist in securing uninterrupted supply of the increasing electricity demanded as Croydon expands further.

This could mean, for instance, that the twin multi-thousand KVA back-up generators, that a mobile telecoms company has on standby nearby where the transofrmer is situated, may be needed even less now with increased investment in mains supply.
