The RSPCA is now caring for a rat named Thumbelina after it was abandoned in a shoebox with a heartbreaking note attached

Thumbelina - as she’s been named by RSPCA staff - was found in Brighton Road, Purley, on July 19 with a note that read: ‘pls rehome me, can’t keep her’ [sic].

A man stumbled upon the package laying on the ground, and after reading the note scrawled on top, opened it up to check what was inside.

RSPCA animal collection officer Monica Faloona went to collect the little critter.

“I’m so relieved that this gentleman took the time to investigate this suspicious box because, had he have not read the note and peered inside, poor little Thumbelina may not have been discovered," she said.

“She had chewed a hole in the side of the box so had clearly been trying to escape on her own, but thankfully we were able to help her.”

The little grey and white rat is now being cared for by staff at RSPCA South Godstone Animal Centre, who have named her Thumbelina. If she isn’t claimed then she will be rehomed.

“She is very friendly so we’re sure she’ll find a home quickly,” Ms Faloona said.

“We know that sometimes an owner’s circumstances can change or they may no longer be able to care for their pet any more but we’d remind anyone who is struggling that there is help and advice out there.

“To abandon an animal, particularly one as small and vulnerable as Thumbelina, could have had tragic consequences as she could have easily been attacked by a bigger animal or a bird, or could have been knocked into the road.

“There is never an excuse to abandon your pet and there are charities and organisations who can help if you are struggling to look after your pets.”

The RSPCA is now investigating how Thumbelina was abandoned and would like anyone with any information to get in touch by calling the appeal line on 0300 123 8018.
