If you had anything to do with the Sunshine Group and the concerts they produced, or St Andrew's Church at Thornton Heath, then the name Gilda Margaret James probably rings a bell.

For more than 30 years, Sister Gilda - as she was known - served the community of Thornton Heath in ways that never failed to astound.

On Thursday, June 27, just three days before to her 94th birthday, Sister Gilda passed away.

At her funeral, a loving eulogy was read out to honour her life.

"Sister Gilda was very active in St Andrew's Church, Thornton Heath until her passing," it read.

"She undertook Reading and Eucharistic Ministry, even visiting the sick and offering communion to them.

"Moreover, she developed and facilitated the Sunshine Group concerts, which saw many young people displaying their talents yearly to good numbers."

A Croydon Arts Champion award finalist in 2006 for the concerts she organised to raise money for various charities, Glida did it all, but was reluctant to accept any praise.

"I am a little scared," Gilda said in an interview in 2006.

"I don't like any fuss, I like to be in the background. I like what I do, I don't look for reward, I am not that kind of person."

Joyce Lumsden echoed those statements when talking about her late friend.

"We used to call her the hen, because she was was always helping so many children at her house," she said.

"She's done a lot of good work for the community in Thornton Heath and her home country of Grenada.

"It's very very sad to lose her."
