Firefighters were called to flat in South Croydon after a candle set the home alight.
The occupant of the Columbine Avenue property was not home at the time of the fire and the alarm was raised by a passer-by who saw smoke coming from the window.
The Brigade’s fire investigators believe the fire was caused by a candle left unattended.
Part of the first floor flat was damaged by fire.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Candles are one of the most common causes of fire. It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from curtains and anything else that can easily catch fire.”
