Croydon commuters had to swap trams in the middle of rush hour last Wednesday after the glass in a door broke.
The tram was heading towards Wimbledon at about 5.30pm when the incident happened at the Belgrave Walk stop.
Because the door is covered by protective plastic, the glass did not shatter and fall out and the tram was able to carry on to its destination.
It also made the return trip as far as Therapia Lane, where it terminated and went into the depot for repairs.
It is not clear what caused the glass to break but Roger Harding, Tramtrack general manager, said: "We have protected plastic covering on our doors so they won't shatter. This meant the driver could carry on towards Wimbledon and get back as far as Therapia Lane, avoiding a service problem for those passengers. We do not know exactly what caused it."
