Works could begin as soon as 2018 to build two 25-storey tower blocks opposite East Croydon Station.

A planning application has been submitted which would see nearly 450 homes built on Cherry Orchard Road, while also bringing a "café culture" to the area.

Regeneration specialist Menta is one of the companies behind the proposal and its chief executive Craig Marks says the project would also mean the completion of the east/west pedestrian link from Central Croydon, through East Croydon train station and into Addiscombe.

"We are committed to delivering a desirable place to live and work, with quality homes and new community spaces," he said.

"We are also committed to delivering better links to shops and public transport and will fund, build and install the new bridge link, subject to all necessary Network Rail and Croydon Council consents."

In total, 445 homes will be built - 338 within two 25 storey towers and 107 in a third building of five to nine storeys.

The plans will also include creating new green and play spaces for the new residents.

Housebuilder Redrow is one of the other companies behind the application and planning director Ricardo Rossetti said if approved, the works would begin in 2018.

“Together with Menta, we have now delivered 300 new homes for East Croydon, including affordable homes in partnership with Family Mosaic," he said.

"We are enthusiastic to continue that delivery programme with this latest phase of Morello and, subject to planning permission being granted for both applications, we are working towards starting on site in 2018."
