The manager of a Croydon restaurant who was criticised for only wanting women to apply for a cleaner's position has hired a man to fill the spot - because no females wanted the job.

Ridvan Das, of Mazi Restaurant, in London Road said the decision to sometimes hire women instead of men was "just a part of business."

Mr Das said he wanted a woman to fill the position because "a normal guy is not going to be as clean as a woman."

"Men are a bit messy," he said. "I need a woman to help me at home so I thought more women would be a good thing for the restaurant.

"I come from a home where my mum does everything, that’s how I was brought up."

Mr Das caused outrage on social media when he put a sign in the restaurant window and posted on recruiting website Indeed asking for "part time staff required (female)."

One Facebook user posted: "I would have thought it was illegal to stipulate the sex of staff unless it's necessary to the job, for instance cleaning ladies-only changing areas."

Mr Das added: "How I see it, females are a bit cleaner than men and they look after things bit more."

He said: "Female waitresses have better relationships with male customers if you know what I'm saying. We notice that men leave more tips when they're served by a woman rather than a man."

Both men and women are employed at the restaurant, but Mr Das admitted the former outnumbered the latter.

Despite wanting a woman to fill the position, a man was eventually hired for the cleaning job.

"No females came through the door and applied," Mr Das said.
