People are outraged that Coulsdon is set to lose its only Lloyd's Bank branch.

The bank will officially close on February 26, 2018, as the company cited a lack of customers as the main reason for the decision.

While branches in Purley, Banstead and Caterham will remain open, the Councillors for the Coulsdon West ward feel the amount of time it will take to get to these sites will be too much for some people.

Councillors Jeet Bains, Luke Clancy, Mario Creatura and Ian Parker voiced their displeasure in a letter to Lloyd's.

"We note that you advise our residents to travel to Caterham branch in future - a full 30-minute journey from Coulsdon by public transport requiring two trains or two buses," the letter said. "This is not acceptable, particularly for the elderly who often do not have access to personal computers, let alone online banking.

"We urge you to reverse your decision, particularly taking into account the increase in housing units that are in the process of being constructed in our town, and the footfall that will bring."

In a report put out by Lloyd's detailing the closure of the Coulsdon branch, it noted that 493 customers only use this particular branch and have no other way to bank.

"We have made the difficult decision to close this branch due to customers using it less often," the report said.

"In addition, the majority of customers are also using alternative ways to bank and we have another branch close by."

The report also noted that "counters at Coulsdon branch are 7 per cent quieter than a year ago"
