A yellow box junction in Wimbledon has collected more than £130,000 in penalty charges in one year.

According to data released after a Freedom of Information request, the yellow box junction on Durnsford Road, outside Bassett House, has seen a staggering 2,116 Penalty Charge Notices issued to drivers for illegally entering and stopping.

A total of £130,719.59 has been received in payments toward these PCNs.

The figures were correct as of January 3, 2017 and the request was received on December 21.

Forty one new ANPR traffic cameras were installed in Merton in April 2016 and began operating in June of that year with Durnsford Road being a key junction where cameras were installed.

Councillor Ross Garrod, Merton Council's cabinet member for street cleanliness and parking, said: "Residents have told us that traffic congestion is one of their top concerns and enforcing traffic regulations is one way the council tackles this.

"The council operates a firm but fair approach to enforcement and is completely transparent with motorists who break road traffic regulations or parking that clogs up our roads.

"After including the costs of running our parking enforcement service, any surplus made from traffic contraventions contributes to the cost of the Freedom Pass which in 2017 cost the council over £9m."
