As part of a plan to improve air quality in Croydon, £180,000 a year will be spent planting trees.
Each year until 2023, 700 trees will be planted across Croydon to make the area less polluted.
In total, £900,000 will be spent planting 3500 new trees, something Councillor Stuart King said this was one of may steps to reducing air pollution.
“Planting thousands of new trees in the next few years will make Croydon’s local environment less polluted and more attractive," he said.
"This is just one of 50 steps we are taking to improve air quality in our borough.”
So far, three trees have been planted in Norwich Road, Thornton Heath.
Around 250 more will be planted within the coming months, and the remainder of this year’s batch, each of which will start at around three metres high, will be placed next winter.
