A pedestrian crossing on a busy Wimbledon road that was four years in the making has now been installed.

The new crossing in Leopold Road opened on Sunday (February 18), just in time for when the schools opened after their half term holiday.

It has been a long time waiting for the zebra crossing after a petition was started in 2014 to bring this crossing to this busy road after various incidents, including a six-year-old girl who was hit by a car.

Councillor Daniel Holden said: “I am delighted to see this important road safety measure installed.

“Councillors in Wimbledon Park and Hillside continually lobby the Council and TfL to make our roads safer, this zebra crossing will make walking to school or the shops much better.

"Thanks also to those local parents who raised a petition on this.”

Councillor Janice Howard added: “I am delighted that after years of campaigning to make Leopold Road safer for school children and residents to cross we have finally achieved it, making it a safer road and slowing traffic.”

Additional alterations to the road layout have taken place so that pedestrians and approaching vehicles have suitable visibility near to and on the new crossing.

The changes include a new speed table, the removal of two parking bays and the realignment of Woodside and Kenilworth Avenue junctions.
