Seven scouts from Wimbledon will join more than 45,000 other scouts from around the world at the 24th World Scout Jamboree in the USA next year.

One of the seven young scouts selected is second youngster member 13-year-old Ruby Flew, who sealed her place after completing an application form and attending a weekend selection camp.

The seven Wimbledon scouts are now part of a group of scouts from South West London who will be attending the Jamboree as part of two Units (The Swan & Fox and The Double Decker).

Ruby's mum Liz Flew, 47, of Queens Road, said: “They are super excited to go to America and meet other scouts.

“They are really thrilled and really looking forward to travel. The Jamboree experience will further broaden their outlook and they will return to Wimbledon bringing fresh ideas, greater open mindedness and positive outlooks that will benefit the community as a whole.

“They will also come back from the experience and be role models.”

The seven scouts have already participated in various team building and fundraising activities with many more activities planned for this year.

As part of the commitment each young person has signed up to raise nearly £3,000 to fund their trip which includes a significant donation to fund a scout from a developing country to attend the Jamboree.

The World Scout Jamboree is held every four years.

Mrs Flew said: “This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity. There are just seven participants selected from this area.”

The seven individuals selected to participate in the World Scout Jamboree in 2019 are Ruby Flew 13, Gemma Kerridge 14, Robin Blair 13, Alex Sherratt 12, Daniel Lambert 16, Claire Dulson 16 and Ioannis Konstantinou 14.
