A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire broke out at a block of flats in Carshalton.

Police were called to reports of a fire in Alexandra Gardens shortly before 8pm on Tuesday (February 27) following attendance by the London Fire Brigade at 5.45pm.

Some of the first floor was damaged by the blaze, which was under control before 8.30pm, while a 40-year-old man was later arrested by officers.

A Met Police spokesman said he has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

An LFB spokeswoman added there were no reports of any casualties or injuries.

It is currently unknown what caused the fire.
