Mountsfield Park is set to get its own parkrun after joggers campaigned for years to get one set up there.

Parkruns are held across London and the UK where people gather in local parks for timed five kilometre runs, helping grow a community around the events.

There are parkruns in Hilly Fields and Beckenham but many people wanted to have a run closer to home.

David Rose had been working for two years to get a parkrun in Catford and after all his hard work, it looks like one will finally arrive.

He said: “I am very excited this project which has taken a lot of my time and energy over the last two years or so is finally coming to fruition and I am really excited about sharing parkrun with my local community, meeting new people and becoming a positive influence in Catford.”

David was able to put together funding thanks to the Aviva Community Fund, which helps funds local community projects, but it did take a long time.

“I had to put a case to parkrun HQ for the event to be held in the area,” David explained, “and I had to raise the initial funding to show there was a willingness in the local community to have an event like this.

“The funding came from the Aviva Community Fund which is a yearly contest to spread funding from Aviva to local community projects.

“We had to have our initial application approved, then the projects were put out to a national public vote and when we passed that stage a group from Aviva assessed each project for things like longevity and community impact.

“Once the park run is going we will also have to feedback to Aviva about the community impact.”

The parkrun does not yet have a start date but David is hoping it will open within the next month.
