Just days after a Stormzy inspired piece of art was unveiled in the town centre, the council’s graffiti team has painted over it.

Stormzy stunned the nation during a live performance at the Brit Awards last month when he asked Theresa May "where's the money for Grenfell?"

In a freestyle rap, he said: "Theresa May where's the money for Grenfell? What you thought we just forgot about Grenfell?

"You criminals, and you've got the cheek to call us savages, you should do some jail time, you should pay some damages, you should burn your house down and see if you can manage this."

Those words were then put on display for all of Croydon to see thanks to artist Edwin.

However the Katherine Street artwork hadn't been up even a month before it was removed by council, in what was described as an "error in judgement."

A council spokeswoman said: “The council’s graffiti team routinely respond to reports of graffiti and were acting in good faith in removing this. "However, on this occasion an error in judgment was made.

“We have apologised to the artist and have invited them to repaint the piece.

"Croydon is very proud of its collection of street art and we will be speaking with staff about how they asses murals to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
