Karl Robinson is happy Josh Magennis clapped the travelling Charlton fans today - despite being jeered by them.

Magennis missed a penalty to equalise for the Addicks in their 4-1 defeat to Peterborough. It proved to be the turning point in a hugely damaging defeat for the Londoners.

The Northern Ireland striker, who is the club’s top scorer with eight goals, was subbed off just after the hour mark, and it was a change that was sarcastically cheered by his own supporters.

Robinson told News Shopper: “He clapped the fans and I’m proud of that. Fans have an opinion on us in this profession whether that’s as a manager or player. Fans will always have an opinion.

“We respect what they think because it’s their right to judge. It doesn't mean a player doesn't say thank you for your support by clapping them.

“It showed the type of man that Josh Magennis is with the class he has shown by clapping them. It’s a sign of who he is as a person.

“Okay, we want him to score goals, we all want him to do what top strikers do. I’ve got tremendous faith in him. He’s a top, top man. Unfortunately, you see [Peterborough striker] Jack Marriott staying between the goal posts and when he got an opportunity, he took it.”

Magennis was replaced by Wolves loanee Michal Zyro, who scored his first Charlton goal.

Robinson subbed Magennis for the first time in the league this season.

When asked to explain his thinking behind the change, he said: “When you're searching for a goal, sometimes you're running around like a lunatic.

“Josh was running to where the corner flag was and was running back to our goal. I didn't need that at that time, I needed him to be a little bit more selfish and stay between the posts.

“Maybe that’s the thing, Josh needs to think more about himself scoring goals rather than doing too much running for the team. He’s covered the second or third most distance in the whole team.

“I’d much rather lose some of that and add the goals. We knew Michal would stay up front, we knew he’d stay in the box and we knew if he got a chance, he’d take it.”
