A Croydon man has been left baffled after he was handed a £130 parking fine.

Steven Jacobs was going about his day like normal and had parked his car in his usual space in Edridge Road.

Little did he know there had been a change in parking restrictions.

He said the "small notices" were well above the eye level of someone parking a car and that it was "ridiculous" he was fined because he didn't spot a sign on the lamppost.

"Just putting few signs up is not enough to prompt people and make them realise they may be in contravention of new conditions," Mr Jacobs said

"Essentially this is a trap and in my opinion reprehensible.

"A penalty essentially for not being super observant."

Just three notices were put in place in Edridge Road, as only a few of the spaces had a parking suspension.

Mr Jacobs said he was not looking for the notices as there were cars parked along most of the road.

Councillor for the Fairfield Ward where this incident took place, Helen Pollard was just as shocked to hear about what happened.

"The council insists residents access services online and that is how Mr Jacobs purchased his parking permit," she said.

"Therefore the council has all his details: they know where he lives and they know his email address.

"The reasonable thing to do would have been to email him, and other residents in the area, to let them know about the changes in parking."

Mr Jacobs has appealed the fine but it was rejected.

Although a spokesman for council said they don't discuss individual cases, he did offer some advice to anyone is a similar predicament.

"When we suspend parking bays, often for utility companies or emergency works, we put up Department for Transport-approved yellow signs around the site to clearly inform drivers they cannot park there," he said.

"We do not discuss individual cases, but residents who have unsuccessfully challenged a parking notice can go to the independent parking adjudicator for a review.”
