Lee Bowyer is unsure whether he wants the Charlton job on a full-time basis.

The former Addicks star was appointed caretaker manager yesterday after Karl Robinson’s exit.

Now, he has 10 games to try to get his boyhood club promoted to the Championship - they are five points off the top six.

Bowyer, who was Robinson’s assistant, said: “I’m here until told otherwise. Hopefully it’ll be until the end of the season and we’ll go from there.

“Ask me that [if I want the job on a permanent basis] at the end of the season. Obviously, at the moment, it’s what I’ll be doing and I’m excited to be doing it.

“Coaching is different, you make the players improve as individuals which makes the team better. I think I’ve done that since I’ve been here.

“I’m going to carry on doing that. But tactically, it’s going to be what I think so yeah, I’m looking forward to it.

“I’m grateful to be given a chance. I started here as a player and it’s crazy that I had my first coaching job and now a taste of management here. I’m excited and I’m looking forward to Saturday against Plymouth.”

Bowyer was brought in by Robinson at the back-end of last season to work with the club’s midfield before becoming the Addicks’ assistant manager in the summer.

He added: “I had no intention of becoming a manager and I had no intention of becoming a coach.

“When I was finished playing football, I had five years out and I enjoyed that time. But I went with Harry Kewell to Watford's Under-21s side to help him out - it gave me the taste of that winning feeling and being in and around football again.

“Karl gave me the chance to come in and help out last season on a part-time basis and things changed.

“I came in and I was meant to be here two days a week just to help the midfield. But then his assistant Richie Barker left in the summer and Karl asked me to be the assistant and now I’m sitting here as caretaker manager.”
