Thornton Heath’s newest Hindu temple has submitted a follow up planning application.

Plans to redevelop a warehouse in Aurelia Road into a temple were approved by Croydon Council on February 28.

The temple, called Sivayogam, can  accommodate up to 75 people at a time and open between 8am and 9pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 8pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

As part of the approval a number of conditions were imposed which the applicant has to meet to satisfy council planners.

To meet the conditions the temple says it has installed two electric car charging points as well as an extraction system for the kitchen to enable cooking on site.

The initial planning consent said no food can be cooking on the site until “a scheme for the control of odours, smoke and grease has been submitted to and approved by the council”.

In the most recent application the temple said: “The charity is dedicated to serve its devotees and as part of the religious ritual, the temple is required to cook food for their staff and also their visitors on the day of all prayers.

“The kitchen will need to be equipped to facilitate for everyday cooking.” It added that a catering designer has been appointed to revamp the kitchen including an extraction system.

The application to “discharge conditions” was validated by the council on Tuesday (May 29) and a decision is expected to be made by July 24.
