A school's decision to have its students grow sunflowers over the six-week break has been praised by parents.

Kids who are moving up from key stage 1 to key stage 2 at Monks Orchard Primary School will be taking part in poetry, collages, Fibonacci and have a personal diary to complete, all to do with growing and nurturing a sunflower seedling.

“It’s fantastic that the school is helping our children with this transition," parent Stephanie Mitchell said.

"It's so good for them to have a fun project over the long school holiday.”

The deputy head teacher for key stage two, Helen Gardiner said the project was handed out to help kids make the transition in year groups.

"We wanted to help ease the move from each key stage by giving them a cross curricular project that involves skills and tasks they will need in year 3,” she said.

“We are very lucky that Cooling’s Garden Centre and Halfords have supported the project in which we are able to give a brand new bike to the pupil who has made the most effort overall in this initiative over the summer."
