A workman was trapped inside the cab of his digger after it fell into a basement.

The man was operating the mechanical digger during demolition work on a site in Dingwall Road yesterday when it appears the ground underneath it collapsed. The digger tipped forwards and became wedged in the basement below.

Firefighters freed the uninjured workman who was stuck inside the cab after the accident.

The Health and Safety Executive is aware of the accident. Two inspectors visited the site yesterday afternoon.

A HSE spokesman said today that it is unclear whether it will launch a formal investigation.
