Thornton Heath pool has been closed following the discovery of glass in the water.

The tiny shards of glass were found this morning in the main pool after a car crashed into the leisure centre on Monday.

The Toyota Rav4 smashed into the side of the leisure centre on Monday afternoon stopping just before it ploughed into the pool.

The pool was closed, reopened and then had to be closed again today, after the glass was discovered in the water.

The shards are too small to be picked up by the centre's vacuum cleaner, so the pool will have to be drained - a process which would normally take between eight and 10 days.

A council spokesman said: "We apologise to members of the public that the pool will be out of use while this work is carried out but our utmost concern must be towards ensuring that the pool is completely safe before it is reopened."
