This year's Croydon young environmentalist may only be 14 years old but he has done more to promote action on climate change than many adults.

Over the past twelve months alone, Aazim Ihsan has toured several schools, including one in Tokyo, to spread the message that something needs to be done, and even met Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tony Blair to discuss the matter.

Aazim, who was last year named Climate Change Champion for London, said: "The most rewarding part has to be when you see that people are willing to change their actions to help beat climate change just through speaking to them.

"The need to take on board an ongoing programme in schools that will educate the generation of today and the many to come about climate change has always been seen as a must from my point of view.

"Young people are the future voters, business leaders and voices on the issue therefore it is vital that this sector of society is keenly engaged."

Aazim has also been keen to see changes implemented a his own school, Royal Russell in Coombe Lane, and set up its first Green Day in June this year.

He said: "It was a day in which everyone, including staff, were encouraged to reduce their carbon footprint for travelling into school through Walk for a Better Future'.

"Having noticed that many pupils are driven to school despite the fact they live less than a mile away, the aim was to highlight to all young people a way in which we can tackle climate change.

"I myself walked 8.3 miles from my home in Cheam and was pleased to see a difference at my school afterwards as many pupils have begun taking the tram, train or walking."

Aazim was highly commended at the awards last year but went one better this time around. On winning he said: "It's wicked. I didn't expect anything and I am in quite a bit of shock."

Because he lives in Cheam, Aazim has also been nominated as Sutton's young environmentalist, with their awards taking place on Monday.

If he wins he will represent both Croydon and Sutton against winners from Kingston, Merton, Richmond, and Wandsworth at the grand final awards on November 16.
