AFC Wimbledon winger Tony Finn insists his place in the Dons starting line-up is not guaranteed despite another match-winning display at the weekend.

Finn notched his 12th goal of the season in the 2-1 victory at Maidstone United on Saturday to blast his side back into Ryman Premier Division title contention.

And he got both the goals on Tuesday night as Dons beat Ashford Town 2-1 - despite Antony Howard's needless sending off.

The former Metropolitan Police midfielder has been in scintillating form this season, but his place has come under threat after the high-profile arrivals of Mark De Bolla and Jon Main to the club.

But Finn insists that the increased competiton for places in the attacking third will only improve his game.

"Bringing better players to the club is always a good thing," said Finn.

"We want to win things. To do that, you need a squad to compete and we have a very strong squad.

"There is always going to be competition so I know I have to play as well as I can to stay in the team every week.

"Having the competition spurs me on.

"All the players in the team bring something different and having De Bolla and Main in the team has helped us improve, which is the most important thing."

However, Finn understands that the minute his performance levels drop, he will be warming the bench.

"No one is untouchable," he admitted.

"If you think you are, you will slip up and let your game drop.

"You need to stay on your toes. If you start slacking at this club, you know you will be dropped."

Suffering from the flu epidemic that swept through the Dons camp over Christmas, Finn dragged himself out of his sick bed to play a major part in his side's four-match winning streak to help the Dons narrow the gap on leaders Chelmsford City.

And he had no qualms about doing that.

"I think we all love playing football and that's why you get out of your sick bed," said Finn.

"You know you have to do a job for the team. We just have to go out there and win as many matches as we can.

"Chelmsford will drop points and slip up at places so we need to be ready to capitalise."

The Dons travel to Tonbridge Angels in the FA Trophy second round on Saturday.
