High price of festive blaze

Only three of the 12 tenants from the flats destroyed in a Boxing Day blaze in Norbury had contents insurance.

The fire in Marston Way destroyed the top three storeys of the four-storey block, leaving Croydon Council with no choice but to demolish the building.

“When you are faced with tenants without any funds or possessions then the burden falls on the council. This is without doubt the biggest fire I have seen in all my time in Croydon.”

Councillor Dudley Mead

Councillor Dudley Mead, cabinet member for housing, was one of the first people at the scene on Boxing Day and on Monday he spoke about the devastation it caused.

Coun Mead said: "It really was a most ferocious fire and when I saw what it had done I must say I was shocked. We should be proud of what our officers achieved. I am aiming to rebuild it within 12 months, it is very tight but the tenants' insurance cover only protects them for one year so it will have to be done."

Less than half of the tenants and leaseholders had insurance and lost everything in the fire.

Coun Mead added: "When you are faced with tenants without any funds or possessions then the burden falls on the council. This is without doubt the biggest fire I have seen in all my time in Croydon."

the burden falls on the council

Why should it fall on the council, I have to pay council tax and why should it be used to bail people out who haven't bothered and can't be arsed to get contents insurance. Mine costs me £7 a month and protects me against things like this. Even people on benefits can afford this, its only slight more expensive the cigarettes or a four pack of Stella.

The joke of it is that I bet you the majority of these don't even pay council tax as they are "out of work (working on the sly)" but yet they will be crying to them to get a new place, new gear etc.

I pay £1050 a year in council tax and I can imagine I would very quickly told to "jog on" if I asked for anything in return.

you are a lucky one then, the cheapest insurance I have found is £32.56 per month, as it depend on the area you live as well as a number of other factors.

No I dont work, and NO I DONT work on the sly, I have been medically unfit for work for 3 years now. (no doubt a scrounger in your eyes)

As for the comment about the burden falls on the council, perhaps thats because as thier tenants, the burden IS on the council to rehome them, and that is what the councillor is referring to..

Also the comment about "Even people on benefits can afford this, its only slight more expensive the cigarettes or a four pack of Stella.
" not everyone who is out of work for one reason or another, smokes and drinks or does either.

Your views are very narrow minded, and tar everyone with the same brush.

When is the Council going to announce a full inquiry into what happened on Christmas Day? There are other similar blocks in Marston Way and there is a need to know ALL the facts. We all know the tragic outcome but there should be a full investigation - has -the LFCDA issued a full fire report? Whilst many of the occupants were uninsured there also appears to be a lot of disquiet over the background to this incident that has never been addressed.

Paul, three things I've noticed
1) Names always start with a capital
2) Insurance for £32.56, I think that shows how many false reports are made to the insurance company by unemployed individuals and how trusted they are. I don't live in a nice area and crime isn't low here so I can't see any other reason for the cost for you.
3) If you can afford a computer, phone line and internet access then £32.56 can’t be that hard to get. If it is I would say that contents insurance is more important than the above. Time to prioritise, so other people don’t have to pay for your mistakes.

Why is it ONLY unemployed individuals that make all these 'false' claims???
Who says I can afford a computer etc, I access my internet from either the local library or my parents house.

Whats with the comment about other people paying for my mistakes?

So to sum up, because I am not working due to illness, according to your comment I cannot be trusted.

So as my earlier comment stated, yet again you are tatting everyone with the same brush if they dont work, for whatever reason.

I have to agree with you Frank, I pay an extortionate amount of Council tax - over £1300 per year. And the fact that it will now be used to 'Re-imburse' all these lost possesions an outrage!!! As you say, i pay a small sum each month, like most sensible people....... Maybe shave an inch or two off your new flat screen tv........and that way you can insure it - protect it against events like these. If these guys are stupid enough to have not had home insurance.....let them loose it - Dont use 'my' money to replace it.

Alot of judgement, pontification, resentment and ignorance displayed here. An indictment of typically emasculated Croydon 'men' who choose to vent their frustrations in cyberworld. So easy, isn't it? You are disempowered by your mundane lives and your lack of status in Croydon. Good Luck to The Council in extracting their dues from you to pay for a Borough that YOU choose to live in. A Borough where, no doubt, you have been mentally castrated in one or more of its salubrious locations? A place you all call home....
No wonder you are all so angry. You feel like fools for choosing to live in Croydon. The rear end of London. Hilarious!
I bet you all got some lovely office clothes at the Next sale on Boxing Day. Clothes for your drab, grey lives in Croydon. The rear end of London. Oh yes, I pity your Council Tax charges. I pity you for choosing to live in Croydon. A culturally barren wasteland. And you are paying for the privilege!
What a shower!

Answer this, I was a lease holder, I had contents insurance, I want answers from the local authority's regarding the fire not money, thats all the residents are asking for. You try and put yourself in our posistion, you own your property for so many years, you have brought your children up in your home, you have worked hard to make your home a safe home. Your negative comments are not voiced very loudly, your comments just read as somebody looking on at this disaster from a money point of view, you explain your comments to young children who have lost everything including pets and sentimental objects that money cant but. The council have an obligation to give the residents involved answers, this is not just for our sake, but hopefully they will learn from this and stop this ever happening again or will be in the situation of knowledge to help victims in the future. I pray that no one goes through what these 11 families are going through. Also my grammer might not be perfect due to my frustation over negative comments.
