The detective who led the Suzy Lamplugh investigation for six years does not believe she was a victim of the "Suffolk Strangler".
Det Supt Jim Dickie headed the Scotland Yard inquiry into the estate agent's disappearance from 2000 until his retirement in 2006.
He said there was little to link Steve Wright, 49, to Miss Lamplugh - other than the fact they once both worked on the QE2 in the 1980s.
Wright, a former steward on the cruise liner, was sentenced on Friday to life in jail after he was convicted of killing five prostitutes in Ipswich.
It was revealed that police investigating Miss Lamplugh's disappearance were to study evidence given during Wright's trial.
Miss Lamplugh, from Mortlake, was 25 when she disappeared in 1986 while showing a house in Fulham to a client named "Mr Kipper".
Her body has never been found but she was officially declared dead in 1994. A man was arrested in 1989 but never charged.
Det Supt Dickie believes convicted killer John Cannan is responsible for her death.
