Croydon TA soldiers returned from helping fight the Taliban in Afghanistan to the open arms of their children, wives, husbands and loved ones.

The 151 transport regiment, based at Croydon Regimental HQ, were tasked with the upkeep of motorpool vehicles in Kabul and Kandahaar.

“For me it was really a busman’s holiday, what I do at home is pretty similar to what I was doing over there."

Warrant Officer Class 1 Drew Johnston

Nicknamed "Kabul Cabs" they had to give vehicles a "mini-MOT" every 28 days to ensure operational capability was 100 per cent.

The company was attached to a Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers vehicle maintenance workshop, whose mission was to maintain more than 150 vehicles belonging to a variety of different nations.

Warrant Officer Class 1 Drew Johnston was deployed with more than 50 of his fellow soldiers in August last year. He survived fierce onslaughts from Islamic jihadis, harsh desert temperatures and the freezing mountains above the country's capital, Kabul.

In his civilian life WOC1 Johnston is a vehicle inspector for the Freight Transport Association.

He told the Croydon Guardian: "At night, our main problem was trying to keep the diesel from freezing. The action was mainly in the south, Helmand province and around that area. We would hear of attacks on the radio and in the papers and it was truly worrying.

"One morning at breakfast on January 15 we heard a loud explosion that rattled the windows next to us. It came on the radio that an explosive device had been used on a civilian contractor's convoy.

"Teams were instantly dispatched via armoured land-vehicles to investigate and scout for any survivors. Luckily, there were only injuries and no fatalities.

"Within 30 minutes Blackhawk helicopters were overhead and providing support, the casualties were then brought to our compound by chopper and treated in our medical wing.

"For me it was really a busman's holiday, what I do at home is pretty similar to what I was doing over there. Now I'm going to have some post-op relaxation and take some time to enjoy my family before I go back to work."

Well done lads and lassies! I'm glad my army service ended years ago, which included 10 years with the TA.
I hope you all have employers that can cope with your absences fighting New Labour's wars.

Afghanistan conflict is a pointless war as the Soviets found out and as PM Gladstone found out in the C19th.

I just about believed that the Falklands Conflict and Gulf War 1 were just War's but that is where it ends for me !!!

I wouldn't fight in New Labour's wars -aka Blair's Wars.

Good Drills 151!

Ian Payne - you are an idiot. Forget the politics and support the troops. Nothing is just a 'War.' The unfortunate thing is that conchies like you sit there and pontificate without any service record at all.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Don't forget Paul that politicians rely on attitudes like yours when they get into difficulties. I joined up to fight for OUR country and it's interests not George Bush's. Have you not noticed how quick the politicians are to use 'support Armed Forces' as a shield when the going gets tough for them.

Well said Paul. While I do not think that we should be in Afghanistan, when one joins any of the millitary services you automaticly agree to follow orders and do not question them, that is the way it is.
The troops out there do as they are ordered to do no matter what their believes are. So I say to the likes of Ian Payne, congratulate those who are out there (they do not want to be there), and be thankful for the likes of those who serve their country so people like you can sit at home and choose what you want to do and want to say and have all the freedom to be able to pontificate and have freedom of speech to be able to send in comments like you do.
Try doing that in other countries.

I just wish that all the men and women cud come back safe and sound... ur right anon they do as there told but maybe it should be more clearly announced that there is a good chance they wont come home alive, as for the families left behind its just not that easy to carry on so its not just the one life that is disturbed!

"Automatically agree to follow orders"- like appearing in photo-opportunities with the politicians when the going gets tough. Or when we all thought we were going to get a general election a few months ago.
