Workmen made a shocking discovery this morning when they unearthed an unexploded bomb in Richmond Park.

The rusty device, believed to be a relic from World War Two, was dug up near the entrance to Isabella Plantation at around 11.11am.

The workmen - fearing the device might explode - called police who cordoned off the area.

A team of specialist bomb disposal officers managed to destroy to the bomb, which was about a quarter of a mile from the road, with a controlled explosion at about 12.42pm.

A spokesman for the Met Police confirmed the cordons were lifted at 12.51pm.
