A 29-year-old man has pleaded guilty to wasting police time after falsely confessing to a man's murder.

Three days after Moses Ssendawula was killed in September 2007 Robert Hill from Lower Addiscombe Road, Croydon contacted police to tell them he was responsible.

Mr Ssendawula was found suffering from gunshot wounds in Burgess Park, Southwark, at around 12.57am on September 8 last year.

The voluntary worker - who had been shot in the back and shoulder - was pronounced dead at the scene near the park's entrance in St George's Way.

Hill's false confession meant 400 hours' police time was wasted.

Hill even went as far as to give details of where he had supposedly dumped the murder weapon - resulting in a wasted investigation by a specialist search team.

Hill, who was charged on February 25, is due to be sentenced on March 20 at Croydon Crown Court.

Detective Chief Inspector Adnan Qureshi, who is leading the investigation into Mr Ssendawula's murder, said: "Hill's reckless actions diverted 409 hours of police time away from pursuing those responsible for Moses' murder. The investigation is still active and more than six months on it is vitally important that anyone with information comes forward.

"I would urge anyone who knows why he was in Burgess Park, who was with him during the evening or who knows the motive to come forward.

"Any information will be treated confidentially so please contact Trident in confidence and help us to bring those responsible to justice, and provide answers for his family."

Anyone with information about Mr Ssendawula's murder should call the incident room on 020 8247 4554 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
