Martin Gaunt recorded the fastest time of the year to win the Wimbledon Common 5km time trial on Saturday morning, writes Charles Lawrie.

The Serpentine runner, making his second appearance in the event, completed his second victory in 16 minutes 41 seconds to finish 79 seconds ahead of Hercules Wimbledon teenager Alexander Robinson.

Another Hercules runner, over-40 veteran Jonathan Dobson, was third (18:05).

Not content with his victory, Gaunt followed up with two laps of honour so in the process ran the event's first 10km!

Women's winner was debutant Emma Tomlinson of Ranelagh Harriers (21:09) ahead of Zoe Phillips (21:25) and Geraldine Hellings 22:11.

This was the 63rd running of the time trial and numbers continue to surpass last year's figures, thanks to enthusiast like local runners John and Francesca Carter, both over-60 vets.

They said: "We read about WCTT in the Wimbledon Guardian and, having run for the past five Saturdays, it is now the highlight of our keep fit routine.

"We are amongst the grannies of the field, but the fun of competing against oneself with so many smashing people of all ages is a revelation."
