TRAFFIC lights at one of Enfield's busiest road junctions have been out of action for nearly a week, sparking serious safety fears among residents.
The crossroads where Hertford Road and Southbury Road meet sees a high volume of traffic, especially during the rush hours, but the lights have not been working since Friday.
Enfield resident Kassim Kassim, who lives in Green Street, is up in arms over the problem.
He told the Independent: "It has been like it for five days. It has never been like this in Enfield before.
"It is really dangerous and it could kill someone. It seems as though no-one will do anything about it until someone gets killed."
A spokeswoman for the council claimed that the traffic lights were not its responsibility and it was down to Transport for London (TfL).
Police were aware of the problem but a spokeswoman said that officers were unable to help by directing the traffic because they were too busy on other issues.
A TfL spokeswoman yesterday said that temporary traffic lights were due to be installed in the afternoon and that the permanent lights would be replaced soon.
She said: "There has been an electrical fault. The control unit has just come to the end of its shelf life.
"We are going through a process of modernising controls across London.
"Installing temporary traffic lights should alleviate the current problem."
