Five men were arrested following a 30-strong brawl on Saturday, during which a police officer was attacked with a bottle.

Police were initially called by a member of the public just after 8pm on Saturday evening to the One Stop shop in Kingston Road and the two officers who attended arrested a 26-year-old man for public disorder.

As the officers made the arrest the situation quickly escalated after one of them was assaulted by the man and a group of between 10 and 15 of his friends who had all been drinking alcohol became hostile. More boozy thugs arrived from the nearby recreation ground and became involved in the brawl.

The officers quickly called for emergency assistance and the scene was soon crawling with cops in an attempt to calm the situation. The police helicopter was immediately scrambled to direct and record the incident and a dog handler was used to help calm the situation.

One officer who had moved into the recreation ground had a bottle thrown at their head which was fortunately deflected and a 20-year-old suspect was restrained with a baton and arrested as a result.

Responding to the incident, Mole Valley Neighbourhood Inspector John Tadman, said: "This was violent disorder involving a large group of aggressive and drunk people. The two officers who initially attended understandably felt threatened and called for assistance.

"With the attendance of additional officers, the situation was quickly and efficiently brought under control. Five males have been arrested and two officers were injured while doing so."

Five men, who are all in their 20s or late teens, were arrested for various offences, including violent disorder, threats to kill and assaulting a police officer.

All have been interviewed and bailed pending further investigation.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw the incident, particularly a woman aged roughly in her 40s, who had a young girl walking with her.
