Fifth charge over Shakilus' murder

A fifth teen will appear in court today charged with the murder of a 16-year-old who was killed in Thornton Heath.

Shakilus Townsend, of Tanners Hill, Deptford, was stabbed and hit around the head with a baseball bat in Beulah Crescent on July 3.

The boy known to his family as Shaki, was taken to St George's hospital in Tooting, where he underwent five hours of surgery before dying of complications just after midnight on July 4.

A 16-year-old youth, who was arrested in South Norwood, will appear before Sutton Magistrates' Court charged with his murder later today.

Four youths appeared at Sutton Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with murder and were remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey in October.

They included Tyrell Ellis, 18, of Springfield Road, Thornton Heath, two youths aged 17 and 16, and a 15-year-old girl.

A 22-year-old man has been bailed to return to a south London police station in August pending further inquiries.
