Off-licences and shops in Croydon will be asked not to sell alcohol to under-21s under a new scheme supported by Boris Johnson.

During Mayor's Question Time yesterday the mayor announced that the voluntary initiative will start in Croydon and could then spread across London, as revealed in this week's Croydon Guardian.

He said separate boroughs should decide whether to impose the restrictions, which would leave 18, 19 and 20-year-olds unable to buy alcohol despite being leaglly entitled to do so.

Mr Johnson said the plans could tackle binge drinking by young people, underage drinking and antisocial behaviour.

"Where we have got particular problems in particular areas, off-licences and supermarkets should stop the sale of alcohol to the under-21s," he said. "That is the kind of solution that I think Londoners are looking to us to provide. I do think this is something where the boroughs can take a lead and banish the scourge of binge drinking."

Croydon Council will now try to get licensees to back the scheme.

Meninder Parmer, manager of the Wine Spot in Waddon Road, said she would back plans to stop the sale of alcohol to under-21s.

But she said teens who really want to drink will get it from somewhere and could ask older adults to buy it for them.

"We don't sell alcohol to underage people and if that could go up to under-21s we would support it," she said. "We can try our best but people who really want to drink will still have means to do it.

"The scheme would help stop some people drinking though."

However much I hate to agree with the Arch-Police shoe licker ANNE(Everything has happened to me) GILES it does seem like a good idea.

Have they given any thought for the boozers that have to implement this though.
Perhaps an army of ANNEGILES would be better though.

For someone who is notorious for speaking out of line (the "picanny" comment, that affair with that lady from the Spectator, etc.), surely Boris of all people would know that it's not the consumption of alcohol that's the root problem of antisocial behaviour?

No - I have never liked any police officers' shoes, or boots, or slippers, or even bare feet. I prefer licking ice cream cones.
Also - everything has not happened to me. I have not yet had the following experiences:-
I have not travelled on Condorde. I have not met any of our Prime Ministers. I have not met the Queen - though I did meet Prince Philip in Buenos Aires years ago. He asked me where I had learned my English. I have done a lot of horse riding and sat on a polo pony, but did not ride the latter - nor do I play polo. I have not been whipped with a cat-o-nine-tails, nor have an army of pirates made me walk the plank. So you are entirely wrong. Try again.

I turned 18 last september, and have enjoyed the fact i can go the pubs now... wether it be with my dad or friends... they cant keep upin the laws, we have no freedom as it is, they shouldnt have changed the cigerete age and they definatly shouldnt change the alcohal age... i refuse to wait 3 years before im aloud to drink again, we are not america... at our age ... we need something to keep us entertained.

There is plenty for you to do. Music, cinema, theatre, sports, walking, running, swimming, TV. My husband's youngest nephew went to Leicester University, joined a band, produced some CDs, never smokes or drinks alcohol. Not needed.

You are only a child and should not be deciding anything yet.

If I was 18 I'd be angered by this decision - I was looking forward to turning 18 soon as I hit 13!

I'm now 27 and still get asked for ID and I'm glad. A.) It's a great compliment and B.) It shows that some shops are doing the right thing

However, I think an age restriction of 21 is still silly! So you can't drink til you're 21, can't smoke til you're 18 but you can have a kid at 16?! What's that all about? Who decided a 16 year old is mature enough to look after another life form! Why not make the age restriction the same for everything in that case?

Besides, under age drinking maybe wrong, but I know a few people in their 30's and 40's who go binge-drinking every weekend and I think it's a great shame that it's the underage and younger drinkers that are targeted for this behaviour

*apologies if that made no sense but I am half asleep and on Ibuprofen for neck pain!*
