A charity in Battersea has celebrated its 100th anniversary by welcoming The Duchess of Edinburgh for a tour.

Her Royal Highness visited the Katherine Low Settlement on Tuesday, January 16, as part of the charity's centenary celebrations.

The Katherine Low Settlement, a non-profit organisation dedicated to reducing poverty and isolation in Battersea, has been a pillar of support for the vulnerable members of its community for a century.

Its programmes help over 500 local people every week including the elderly, children and their families, and refugees.

The charity has enjoyed four royal visits since it was officially opened by the late Queen Mother in 1924.

Her Royal Highness paid a visit to the Settlement to learn about its work and extend her thanks to the dedicated staff and volunteers.

The Duchess's visit included a tour of an Elders' chair dance class, a sewing group for women newly arrived in the UK, and a 'Love to Learn' mentoring session for children and young people.

Her visit ended with a brief reception where she met more members of the community and unveiled a plaque marking her visit.

Sarah Gibb, Chief Executive of the KLS, said: "It was an absolute honour for us to welcome Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh to Katherine Low Settlement in Battersea today.

"This year marks the charity’s 100th anniversary of bringing the Battersea community together and we are thrilled to start our centenary year with a Royal visit."

Councillor Juliana Annan, Mayor of Wandsworth, has chosen the Settlement as one of the charities she is supporting this year.

She said: "We really appreciate The Duchess of Edinburgh taking the time to visit Katherine Low Settlement in the London borough of Wandsworth today.

"It is a very deserving charity which is at the heart of the community in Battersea helping the elderly, the young and their families, refugees and other local people who need assistance."
